Can you hammock in Shenandoah National Park?
Can I hammock here?
🟡 Restrictions apply
Likely yes, since campsites list hammocks as permitted equipment, but the park has no published hammock rule, so use wide straps and stay inside your site.
The rules
- We found no hammock specific rule in the Superintendent's Compendium.
- Some Loft Mountain campsites list Hammock as permitted equipment on Recreation.gov. Big Meadows sites vary.
- Backcountry campsites must be at least 20 yards from trails, 10 yards from water and 100 yards from huts and shelters.
- Do not damage trees. Use wide, tree friendly straps.
