Mt. Rogers Winter Hang
One of the original Hammock Forums gatherings, running since 2007 at Grayson Highlands State Park. Cold nights, wild ponies and a big gear raffle.
The Mt. Rogers Winter Hang started with founding Hammock Forums members hiking in to Wise Shelter and later moved to the Grayson Highlands group campground. It runs on volunteers and a shared spreadsheet, with the group site, firewood and toilets covered by a raffle sold in camp. Camping has historically been free. The 2026 edition, planned for January 22 to 26, was cancelled, so check the forum before you plan. Bring serious cold weather gear, since the highlands sit above 4,000 feet.
