How to Keep Bugs Away in a Hammock

Bug nets, timing and site choice. Because mosquitoes love a sitting target.

Beginner · 3 min read

Bugs can ruin a perfect hang. Here is what works.

Use a bug net

A zip-around net or a hammock with an integrated net is the only fix that works all night. Make sure it seals underneath, because mosquitoes bite through hammock fabric.

Treat your gear

Permethrin spray on the hammock, net and straps keeps ticks and mosquitoes from landing. Follow the label and let it dry fully.

Pick your spot

  • Stay away from still water.
  • A light breeze on a ridge or open shore keeps bugs down.
  • Dusk is peak mosquito hour. Get under the net before sunset.

Check the season

Many of our destination pages list the bug season. Late summer in the north woods and early summer in the South are usually the worst.
